Curated by Cierra Britton , The CLP’s art consultant, this effort was originally supposed to launch in May 2020, but with the pandemic and subsequent quarantine the timeline had to pivot with flexibility. It was also important to the artists and The CLP team that the messages conveyed through the murals stood in solidarity with the brothers and sisters fighting for justice and Black liberation. Every artist that participated in this expansive art project is of Black or Latinx descent, which furthers the objectives of community and economic empowerment when it comes to Black and Brown culture.

Neighborhood 360
Commercial Revitalization Program
A program of the LDCENY and supported by the NYC Department of Small Business Services, the Neighborhood 360 Program seeks to identify, develop, and launch commercial revitalization projects in partnership with local stakeholders within East New York. Through proactive planning and targeted investments in place making, marketing, and beautification,
Neighborhood 360 aims to strengthen and revitalize the streets, small businesses, and community-based organizations that anchor East New York. With concentrated focus along the Fulton Street, Atlantic Avenue, and Liberty Avenue corridors; and stretching from Pennsylvania Avenue in the west to Eldert Lane in the east, our program will produce sustainable economic improvements for our neighborhood. As part of Neighborhood 360, the Local Development Corporation of East New York leads the place making and cleanliness & beautification (“Clean and Green East New York”) projects. Under place making, the LDCENY has undertaken two major projects to promote and drive commerce to East New York’s main commercial corridors. First, the “Taste of East New York” project is designed to market Fulton Street as East New York’s hub for authentic Latin, Hispanic, and West Indian cuisine. Second, the “Car Hood” project promotes East New York’s dominant industry: automotive services and retail. Similar to the Taste of East New York project, Car Hood will engage the automotive businesses which are primarily located along Atlantic Avenue in projects which both promote the district as Brooklyn’s epicenter for all things automotive, and connects the automotive businesses with other industries in the neighborhood. Clean and Green East New York a cleanliness and beautification project to clean and beautify East New York’s commercial corridors. We currently have a street cleaning team, Project Sweep, who provide sanitation services to businesses along Fulton Street and Atlantic Avenue on a daily basis. In spring 2018, we will be launching “Clean the Hood”, our anti-litter/pro-recycling and cleanliness campaign to engage local residents, businesses, and community stakeholders in cleaning and beautification activities. Lastly, we have Adopt-A-Planter which is an activity in which we engage local businesses in getting involved in the beautification effort by agreeing to care for a planter which will be installed outside of their business. |

East New York is a neighborhood of deep cultural roots that are visible in every aspect of our community. To experience this culture, one has to look no further than East New York’s various restaurants serving authentic Latin American and Caribbean cuisine. In addition, you can find bakeries; fresh, imported coffee; and delicious wine and spirits. Through the Neighborhood 360 program, the LDCENY seeks to preserve this culture of staple businesses that have served the residents and visitors of East New York for decades.
We call this project the “Taste of East New York” and we are encouraging those from within and around East New York to visit and experience the best, most authentic food in New York City. To achieve this, we are engaging with local businesses to create new and exciting events that not only help promote our neighborhood businesses; and also involve the local and outside communities to visit and participate in our celebration of East New York food culture. |
As part of the place-making grant, the LDCENY envisions a time where East New York will be known for its culturally-flavored and savory foods. To introduce others to what is a staple in the community, the LDCENY hosted the first annual “Taste of East New York Restaurant Crawl” on October 12, 2017. The event brought residents, visitors, and community leaders together with the some of the best food East New York has to offer. Crawlers visited three East New York staples sampling a taste of the Dominican Republic and Caribbean: Tavares Restaurant, Roti on the Run and Rico Pollo; and stopped into Cleveland Wine & Liquors to sample authentic Dominican wine and spirits.
The event was an opportunity for local restaurants to show off their best dishes, while meeting and retaining new customers. BRIC TV joined the group and filmed the entire evening, as well as interviews with the business owners and the crawlers. At the end of the evening, everyone was full of great food and ready to return to the neighborhood for another round. Stay tuned for round two of our restaurant crawl coming soon! |
RESTAURANT CRAWL 2019
On Thursday, November 14, the Local Development Corporation of East New York held our third annual Taste of East New York Restaurant Crawl. People from around the City visited three of the best restaurants our neighborhood has to offer. Our first stop was Caoba Brooklyn Bistro where folks enjoyed Dominican fusion fare. Our second stop of the night was at Roti on the Run, where we got to enjoy the best West Indian food on this side of Brooklyn. Last, but certainly not least, we ended the night at Carro Cafe to enjoy a four course meal in a fun, upscale environment. By the end of the night, everyone was full and happy.
The Taste of East New York Restaurant Crawl is a fun, can't-miss event that brings people together with amazing food at amazing restaurants. If you missed this year's event, keep on the look-out for more information about our next Restaurant Crawl event."

RESTAURANT CRAWL 2018
On Thursday, November 8th, 2018, we embarked on our 2nd annual. For a one-night-only visitors from around New York City came to East New York for a culinary journey through one of Brooklyn’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods. We stopped at three restaurants: El Ambiente, El Gran Mar de Plata, and Carro Cafe. Crawlers were able to taste several Dominican dishes, dance, and meet the business owners who keep the cultural roots of our neighborhood alive.
The automotive industry represents the largest business industry here in East New York making our neighborhood the go-to destination for all things auto. In celebration of our robust automotive industry, we want to partner with our local auto businesses for the “Car Hood” project. This project will not only help drive commerce to the established businesses here; but it will also serve as a way to help develop other businesses along the Atlantic Avenue corridor.
As a stakeholder in the Car Hood project, auto businesses like your will help to develop businesses not related to the auto industry. This will be done through a B to B partnership directory which offers discounts coupons to neighboring restaurant businesses while their cars are being serviced. Car Hood will culminate in 2018 with the inaugural Car Hood Auto Show. Your business, along with other automotive businesses, we be able to showcase your best work, while promoting your business and the services you provide. The annual auto show is a fun and exciting way for East New York’s auto businesses to promote themselves, while creating a fun activity for local and visiting residents. |

Through the Neighborhood 360 Program, the LDCENY was able to secure 70 new garbage cans to be placed along Fulton Street and Liberty Avenue. The new cans were added to replace the old, wire mesh cans currently on Fulton and Liberty. Replacing the wire mesh can mean less garbage overflowing into the street and on the sidewalks. Please help us in keeping East New York clean by using the new receptacles and be sure to report any overflowing garbage to the Department of Sanitation.

In 2015, the LDCENY conducted a Community District Needs Assessment (CDNA) in which we surveyed local businesses and residents about some of the challenges and issues most important to them. The study was also an opportunity for our organization to get a pulse for the neighborhood and what the current needs are. As we conducted our research, it was stressed to us that there was a great need to implement a beautification program along the Fulton Street and Atlantic Avenue commercial corridors to make them more attractive to shoppers. From here, we developed the Adopt-A-Planter program, along with others which we will outline and initiate this year.
The Fulton Street corridor is the main commercial hub in East New York. While several industries can be found along the corridor, the dominant industries are retail and food service. Because of the high concentration of these types of businesses in one area, Fulton Street experiences a high volume of pedestrian traffic. Another feature which contributes to Fulton Street being a high traffic area is the elevated subway line (J/Z line) that runs above the corridor. The elevated line makes Fulton Street an accessible area for travelers and shoppers alike; but it also presents challenges to beautification. Trees and other green spaces are virtually non-existent on Fulton Street, making the corridor appear bare and unattractive. We believe that through the Adopt-A-Planter program, lower-scale greenery improvements to Fulton will create a more attractive, pedestrian-friendly corridor that serves the interests of both businesses and shoppers alike.
The Adopt-A-Planter program is designed to engage businesses in our pro-beautification effort to improve the streets-capes along the Fulton Street corridor. The program has an added benefit to the businesses by not only improving the streets-cape, but also increasing the curb appeal of participating businesses and making them more attractive and welcoming to new and existing customers.
If you have not signed up to adopt a planter and are located on the Liberty Avenue or Fulton Street corridors, please call Jason Jeter to set up an appointment to discuss. 718.385.6700 x 18.
