The health of the environment is a subject of ever increasing
universal concern. Different constituencies and interest groups share in common
the realization that the earth’s resources are finite. The LDCENY recognizes
that the economic future of the community depends upon the application of sound
environmental practices, including the management of the most fundamental economic
asset which is land. This recognition is the impetus for programs such as Brownfield
Remediation.
Brownfield Remediation
Precious few parcels of vacant land are left in New York City. Vacant land
is rare even in East New York where, as recently as two decades ago, it was
relatively plentiful. Unfortunately, most of the vacant parcels that are
still available contain some degree of contamination. To address this problem,
the LDCENY participates in the State of New York’s Brownfield Opportunity
Area program. Under this initiative, local community organizations identify
vacant land areas for remediation and redevelopment. The LDCENY recently
received a grant to research the East New York Empire Zone for such possible
remediation and redevelopment projects.
